Essentials of Weightlifting Programming

This course is for athletes, BWL coaches, personal trainers, strength and conditioning coaches and sports coaches who would like to be equipped with the skills to develop weightlifting programmes that will successfully lead to an athlete’s peak performance.

Description

The Essentials of Weightlifting Programming will provide a framework for coaches and athletes interested in gaining a good understanding of long-term athlete development.  Capture information from the BWL physical training syllabus, which outlines the key physical qualities that are important for weightlifting and how develop these qualities at all levels and stages of development in the sport.

What does the course cover?

  • You will understand how to develop an athlete over the long-term in-line with BWL guidelines.
  • You will understand the physical qualities that are required for weightlifting and how to develop these qualities throughout a weightlifter’s career. Learn with example session plans from the British Weight Lifting syllabus.
  • Be introduced to the fundamental principles for improvement in weightlifting performance over a long period of time. This includes:
    • The training cycles which make a successful training programme
    • An introduction to training variables and how these can be manipulated and adapted to achieve an athlete’s goal.
    • Adaptation theory. This provides a coach with all of the foundation knowledge that they need to create effective programmes.
    • Learn how to programme the competition lifts, derivatives, general strength exercises and accessory exercises
    • Learn to spot an athlete’s strengths and weaknesses.
    • Gain key knowledge from the Complete British Weightlifter Guide, which has been integrated into the course. Principles from the guide can be adapted for any age and any standard/ability.

The Essentials of Youth Weightlifting has been developed in partnership with Rhodri Lloyd and Stephanie Morris from Cardiff Metropolitan University, who provide a wealth of expertise in paediatric strength and conditioning science and have a vast amount of experience working with young athletes in many different sports.

Our bodies were developed with the intention of having all our muscles work together and support each other to accomplish certain movements and tasks. Isolating certain muscle groups to add mass was not what our bodies were naturally made for.

Functional fitness is a classification of training that prepares the body for real-life movements and activities, by strengthening the muscles in the same way you would need to use them for certain tasks. Movements such as squatting, reaching, pulling and lifting are made easier with functional fitness integrated into an exercise routine.
