Essentials of Weightlifting Competition

This is a Continual Professional Development course for athletes, BWL coaches, Personal Trainers and strength and conditioning and sports coaches who are interested in gaining a deeper understanding of the demands of competing in weightlifting.

Description

The Essentials of Weightlifting Competitions will provide information and key themes from the world of sport psychology and the Complete British Weightlifter guide which has been produced by BWL’s performance team, along with British Weight Lifting’s extensive knowledge on Olympic weightlifting and coaching elite athletes through international competitions, from the Commonwealth Games to the Olympic Games.

What does the course cover?

You will be introduced to competition strategies, including:

  • Preparing for competitions
  • What to expect on competition day
  • How to reflect on competition experience in order to improve.

Gain access to the British Weight Lifting tactical syllabus. The syllabus includes session plans which focus on key areas for tactical development such as:

  • Focus and control
  • Time pressure
  • Decision making
  • Subjective performance pressure
  • Objective performance pressure

Familiarise you with key details of weightlifting competitions in the UK:

  • How to qualify for competitions
  • Structure of competitions in UK
  • Rules and regulations in the UK

You will be introduced to British Weight Lifting’s philosophy on:

  • How to develop athletes over the long term
  • How many times should athletes compete in a year at different stages of development?
  • What is the right time to compete to help an athlete’s development

Become acquainted with physical and psychological tactics, as well as which strategies to implement to help an athlete perform at competitions, including:

  • Pre-performance routines
  • Tapering for competitions
  • Decision making in line with long term goals

 

Additional information

This online course has no practical assessment. There is an optional online assessment to be completed to receive a BWL certificate.

10 – 12 hours (plus materials you can go back to time and time again)

The Essentials of Youth Weightlifting has been developed in partnership with Rhodri Lloyd and Stephanie Morris from Cardiff Metropolitan University, who provide a wealth of expertise in paediatric strength and conditioning science and have a vast amount of experience working with young athletes in many different sports.

Our bodies were developed with the intention of having all our muscles work together and support each other to accomplish certain movements and tasks. Isolating certain muscle groups to add mass was not what our bodies were naturally made for.

Functional fitness is a classification of training that prepares the body for real-life movements and activities, by strengthening the muscles in the same way you would need to use them for certain tasks. Movements such as squatting, reaching, pulling and lifting are made easier with functional fitness integrated into an exercise routine.
